Angkor Wat Siem Reap Travel Guide


Talking about Cambodia the Angkor Wat comes first.  It was the center of the great Khmer empire that ruled Cambodia for centuries. Although the great civilization is extinct, its remnant Angkor is there drawing millions of tourists every year. It is located in the northwestern side of Cambodia and is the capital of the Siem Rep province. With its natural beauty of the surroundings, rich heritage and the wonderful hospitality the place welcomes tourists form the distant lands to explore the magnificent secret of the complex.

How to reach

Siem Reap International Airport is the busiest airport in Cambodia and a number of international airlines offer regular flights to and from Siem Rep. The town is around 7 kilometers from the airport and one can reach there either by prepaid taxi, motodop or by availing a tuktuk ride. The hotels also offer complementary pickup and drop at the airport for their guests having prior booking. One can also avail bus services for both domestic and international travel from Siem Rep. There are also boat rides but these are more expensive and takes much time.

Where to stay

Siem Rep houses large number of hotels of all types from the budget hotels to the luxurious ones. Many hostel accommodations are also available and therefore one has number of options to choose from. Siem Rep being the most popular destination, it is better to have advance booking. Of course you can travel without advance booking with the risk of the touts taking you to an expensive hotel other than that fits your budget.

Places of attractions

One can have a great vacation in Siem Rep. Starting with Angkor Wat; a UNESCO world heritage site one can visit many places of the area. The temple complex is an architectural marvel and is also the gateway offering many places of attractions of the area. The scenic beauty and rich historical background of the place have transformed it into a tourist heaven. There are many temples and one should at least visit The Bayon and Ta Prohm temples which are the other places of attractions.

One should also visit the Angkor National Museum. There are 1000 statues of Buddha in one room of the museum and it also houses many things that depict the rich cultural history of Cambodia. There is Beng Mealea, the 12th century temple made of sand stone. It bears the testimony of how the area suffered destruction.  For knowing the heritage of Siem Rep and Cambodia a visit to the McDermott Gallery containing beautiful pictures of the area is a must.

The Cambodian Landmine Museum a huge collection of diffused mine that tell the visitors the tragedy the nation went through during the period of conflict.

The Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre of Siem Rep is one of the largest butterfly exhibition centers in Southeast Asia and you would love visiting the place.


For special massage visit Frangipani Spa and you can also enjoy the vibrant night life enjoying the traditional ‘Apsara’ dance. You can also do shopping at the market and go for fishing at the Tonle Lake.
